A Fun and Free Safety Experience for Incoming Kindergartners

The week-long Safety Town program, offered at no cost by the Middletown City Police Department and the Safety Council of Southwestern Ohio, provides essential safety education for children entering kindergarten. Held each summer at Mayfield Elementary School, the program blends classroom learning with hands-on activities.

Kids enjoy safety lessons, engaging videos, a school bus ride to the Police Department, and the chance to navigate a child-sized village in pedal cars. The goal is to teach children how to safely travel to and from school, whether by bus, walking, or riding with parents.

Safety Town History

The Jack Combs Memorial Safety Town: A Rite of Passage for Incoming Kindergartners

Since 1978, the Jack Combs Memorial Safety Town has been an essential program for preparing young children for school safety. Founded by Harvey Poff of the Middletown Police Department in response to several school-related accidents, Safety Town has become a cherished tradition.

Officer Mike Davis took over leadership in 1984, serving as "Mayor of Safety Town" for 26 years until his retirement in 2011. Since then, there have been several officers filling this role. Officer Sorrell is the newest leader of Safety Town, continuing this long-standing tradition of teaching safety to Middletown’s youngest students.

Officer Mike Davis retired from the Middletown Police Department after 44 years of service in 2011 and passed away in November 2013. As School Resource Officer for 26 years, he was always ready to help when it came to safety & children. He was an integral part of the Safety Council for years. Best known for running Safety Town, he also implemented safety programs on Safety Patrol, Guns, Bus and Seat belts in our schools.
